Margaret Tanenberg Receives Arc Award

May 3, 2016

We are proud to share that Center for Independent Futures staff member Margaret Tanenberg received the Outstanding Family Member Advocate Award from the Arc of Illinois at their annual convention in April.

The Outstanding Family Member Advocate Award recognizes a family member who devotes time and energy to enhance the life of their family member with developmental disabilities. The award honors Margaret for her tireless work for her own family and others, both professionally and personally.

As Director of Family Connections and Community Resources at Center for Independent Futures, Margaret supports families to connect with resources in the community and ensures that participants are receiving the supports they need. She also advocates to legislators about disability issues and works to spread the word about those issues to the community. Margaret was nominated for the award by Sherri Schneider, president of Family Benefit Solutions and a member of the Arc of Illinois Board of Directors, and selected for the award by the Convention Committee.

Margaret began her social work career in a community mental health center. When her son was diagnosed with a disability, her focus shifted to working with children and adults with disabilities in many settings. Margaret has been with Center for Independent Futures from its inception and has played an incredible role in the growth and achievements of our community. Congratulations to Margaret for this well-deserved honor!
