Meet the CIF Cafe...And Give it a Name!

December 17, 2015

Last week, Center for Independent Futures unveiled a new community space, fulfilling a long-term vision for an accessible, welcoming venue for technology access, life skills tutoring, and other events and programming.

Currently nicknamed “the CIF Café,” the space occupies part of the first floor of the Chicago Avenue Community Living Option Residence. Renovations have transformed it into a bright, updated space including a new kitchen and laundry facilities. Programming will kick off in 2016, thanks to the generosity of the Boeing Chicago Employees Community Fund. They presented a check at the opening that will support staffing as we explore what our community is most interested in.

The “CIF Café” will provide a variety of opportunities, including drop-in support for internet access and technology use, life skills learning, social and cultural activities, and other collaborative programming for our community. We hope to create an integrated learning environment where individuals with disabilities can build on their skills while engaging with the broader community and expanding their networks. The community space will create a new venue to partner with other organizations as well as volunteers, potential employers, and families.

Center for Independent Futures would like to thank all of the support that has turned this vision into reality, from the donors who provided initial funding at Spark in 2011 to theBoeing Chicago Employees Community Fund for the generous support presented at the opening reception.

Before programming begins in the new space, we have one more task ahead of us: giving it an official name! We are collecting input from our community as we choose a fitting title for the community space.
