Support Ben's Community Inclusion on #GivingTuesday

November 9, 2015

For many individuals with disabilities, social isolation and boredom are a way of life. Evanston resident Ben Campbell defies the statistics through his full life, complete with a job and a robust social life.

Ben’s involvement in the Center for Independent Futures community spans eight years, including working with his Life Skills tutors, living in a Community Living Option residence, and participating in events and activities. Ben is a regular bowler and has biked with Center for Independent Futures’ Dream Team at the MB Financial Bike the Drive four times. He also serves on the Advisory Council, a group of participants who collaborate to plan the Spark gala and other fundraisers.

Ben’s mother, Gerri Campbell, says she has seen her son make strides in his communication and social skills since joining the Center for Independent Futures community.

“If he lived with us, he’d still work at Whole Foods but then come home to nothing but TV,” Gerri reflects. “Since moving to Evanston, he’s really taken off on his own and blossomed. The activities are important for developing social skills and friendships.”

In addition to his social life, Ben keeps busy with his job and other activities, like Best Buddies. Gerri says that his tutors support him to take advantage of these opportunities by helping him plan his schedule, prepare for events, and keep track of his budget. Through activities at Center for Independent Futures, his job, and beyond, Ben is truly immersed in his community.

“Just about everybody knows him. He knows everything that’s going on in Evanston,” Gerri says. “He’s very happy and has a good life. What else can we say?”
