Support Debbie's Friendships on #GivingTuesday

November 25, 2015

When you support Center for Independent Futures’ Activities Program, the effects of your support go beyond an hour spent at Dating Club or at the bowling alley. According to Activities Director Jeff Morthorst, the goal of the program is to create long-term friendships that have a significant impact on quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

“Through our Activities Program, we have seen friendships form that become active outside of facilitated events,” he shares.

Debbie Wall’s social life is a perfect example of achieving this goal. She’s been part of the Center for Independent Futures community since 2007. Busy with her job at the McGaw YMCA Children’s Center, much of Debbie’s involvement with activities coincides with her natural social circle. She serves on the Advisory Council and has participated in social events like Ladies’ Night and Social Hour.

“Social Hour is fun,” Debbie says. “It’s a good place to be with your friends and see people you haven’t seen in a while or might not normally see.”

Debbie also participates in events with the other members of her residential community, such as weekly meetings and dinner outings. She works with her Center for Independent Futures life skills tutors on goals like budgeting, organizing, and maintaining her friendships.

On #GivingTuesday, December 1, you can join Center for Independent Futures to support individuals like Debbie and their opportunities to make connections and develop social skills. Your gift may be eligible for a match from the Coleman Foundation, doubling your impact in our community.
