Volunteer With heARTwords This Summer

June 23, 2015

The heARTwords writing community is seeking volunteers for its summer workshops. Volunteers support participants to record and share their writing, allowing all individuals to explore their creativity through responses to writing prompts and group discussions.

Barry Siegel, a Center for Independent Futures life skills tutor and published poet, founded heARTwords to encourage participants with disabilities to express their feelings, observations, and imaginations through the written word. Now in its fifth year, the diverse group has 30 loyal members.

The benefits of heARTwords extend beyond the time spent at workshops, Barry shares. “HeARTwords gives the community members the confidence to express themselves with more clarity to everyone they meet,” he says.

This summer, workshops take place on the following Saturday afternoons: June 27, July 11, July 25, August 8, and August 22. The group meets from 3:00-5:30 p.m. at the CIF office (1015 Davis Street in Evanston). No writing experience is necessary to volunteer. If you’re interested in supporting this amazing community, please contact Barry by email at mbarrysiegel@gmail.com or call the CIF office at (847) 328-2044.
